BASKA

Baska is an attractive, busy seaside resort on the island of Krk that is known far and wide for its beautiful 2km. long sand and pebble beach, Vela Plaza, the Great Beach.  It’s beautifully kept, well-guarded and because it is located right in the center of town, packed.. Tourism in Baska date back to 1904, when the Society for the Beautification of the Town was founded. Over the years, the Great Beach has become surrounded by lots of hotels, restaurants, cafes and shops, making Baska a magnet for families because everything is so close by. The town itself is located on the southern end of the island of Krk, which is the largest in the Adriatic. Krk’s tiny international airport draws thousands of Europeans who flock here each summer to enjoy the island’s wonderful nature, rugged mountains and welcoming beaches. From Rijeka, you can drive here over a spectacular arched bridge or take the main ferry to Baska from Lopar on Rab Island (June to September only!). Year-round boats come from Cres Island. For those who like to hike as well as swim and snorkel, there are more than a dozen trails leading up to the surrounding dramatic mountains.  Or simply enjoy walking around Baska’s old town with its connected row houses, meandering walking streets and picturesque harbor.  The original settlement was Roman and was built on the hill that now is the site of the Sveti Ivan church. In 1380 the Venetians burned it down and it wasn’t until in the early 1500’s that a new village was built, closer to the sea. Today, many of these 16th-century houses are well preserved, with shops and small businesses on the ground floors like in many Croatian villages. Baska is also famous for the Baska Tablet, which dates from the year 1100.  According to Wikipedia, the tablet was found in the paving of the Romanesque church of St. Lucy (Sveta Lucija) in Jurandvor near Baška in 1851. The tablet mentions the name Croatia and adjective Croatian for the first time in the Croatian languag - a copy of the tablet is on the Croatian 100kn bank note; the original is in the Zagreb Museum..
