KORCULA

The island of Korcula and the legendary explorer Marco Polo are forever linked.  Though there is no actual historic proof that someone named Marco Polo ever existed—it may have been a nome de plume--locals claim Marco was born here and happy to tell you all about it.  But it’s Korcula’s great beaches, wine, island amenities and being so close to Dubrovnik that draw thousands here.  Lots of ferries and good island bus service too.  And there’s some really ancient history here too. The island is studded with numerous archeological findings from Neolithic times—6-7,000 years ago!  A great place to go is Grad near Nakovanj, on the way to Loviste.  At the top of the hill, you can still see the holes for gathering rain water and cut-out stairs on the south side where pre-historic dwellers made their marks. Island highlights include Lumbarda, a tiny fisherman's village only 10 minutes by bus from the main town of Korcula, known for its vineyards and unique white wine called 'GRK'.  It’s also where the Vela Przina and Bilin Zal are—Korcula’s only real sandy beaches. If you like wine, Smokvica too has a long tradition and its whites, Posip and Rukatac are very drinkable. Pupnat too, is also well worth visiting.  It’s the oldest settlement on the island dating back from Illyrian times, with terrific village architecture and one of the nicest pebble beaches on the island.
