HVAR

Hvar, dating back to the first millennium BC, is considered by many to be the jewel of all the Adriatic islands—some say it’s the best in all the Mediterranean. It’s the longest island in the Adriatic, stretching itself some 68km, but narrow enough to make riding around on a scooter terrific fun. There’s no doubt from the gleaming superyachts in the harbor to its luxury villas, posh restaurants and fancy shops that Hvar has established itself firmly as a world-class island destination. As Solta is known as the island of olives, Hvar is known for its wine. And it’s delicious. There are a number of wine tours and all include tastings and visits to the wonderful groves that dot the island. But Hvar is also Stari Grad, which in 2008 was named to UNESCO’s World Heritage list, where grapes and olives there have been under continuous cultivation for more than 24 centuries. The island has so much to offer—fortresses and ancient settlements, spectacular harbors, vineyards, beaches, nightlife—it’s no wonder it has become a retreat for the rich and famous to chill out on a yacht or enjoy a villa with its own pool. It’s tough to choose between Vis, with its wild nature, spiffy Hvar with so much of everything, and rough around the edges Brac with charming interior villages and fabulous Bol beach—but if your home base is anywhere between Split and Makarska, you can easily ferry to each and enjoy them all!
