TROGIR

Unlike Split, whose heart is Roman, Trogir, just a half hour away, is Romanesque, crowned with outstanding Renaissance and Baroque buildings.  Like Diocletian’s Palace in Split and the walled city of Dubrovnik (also UNESCO sites), it has a warren of ancient streets and alleys leading to the waterfront in one direction and to open air courts in the other.  Thankfully, no cars—so it is a walker’s delight. And its proximity to Ciovo Island (via a three minute walk or 30 second drive over what surely must be the shortest bridge to an island anywhere!) make it a magnet for families who want great swimming and great culture side by side (and a zillion apartments to choose from)! In UNESCO’s words “…Trogir is an excellent example of a medieval town built on and conforming with the layout of a Hellenistic and Roman city that has conserved its urban fabric to an exceptional degree and with the minimum of modern intervention…”  And, it’s s pretty, with boats bobbing about wherever you look, lush vegetation, islands and islets and those great rocky and pebble beaches on Ciovo. It can get crowded in season, but the pace somehow seems slow and easy and there are always those beaches!
